Pack the courtroom this Friday for #OWS! #occupywallstreet

Date: Friday, February 17, 2012
Time: 9:30 AM
Place: Manhattan Summons Court, 346 Broadway (entrance on Leonard Street), Jury 7 on the fourth floor

On Friday morning, National Lawyers Guild Mass Defense attorney Jethro Eisenstein will be arguing for the dismissal of charges brought following the clearance of Zuccotti Park on November 15, 2011. In People v. Nunez, Attorney Eisenstein will be representing one of the many protesters who was charged with trespassing on that day. A favorable decision on Eisenstein’s argument could benefit everyone facing trespassing charges resulting from the eviction, and could show that Brookfield Properties did not have the authority to have people removed from Zuccotti Park.

Come out, pack the courtroom this Friday, and show your support for the Occupy arrestees!

“I lost my job and found an occupation.” #ows #occupywallstreet

On September 6, 2011, I was in tears. I had been let go from my latest job due to restructuring, and after almost an entire year of being either un- or under-employed, I was exhausted.

While searching for work online I stumbled upon a video of an announcement made at a Manu Chao concert about an “occupation” that would be held on Wall Street. In an instant, I was sold. If there is anything I know how to do it is to be stubbornly immobile and as inconvenient as possible until I get what I want. In this case, it’s what we, the people of this earth, want.

I didn’t think people would stay past Monday. I attended one GA at Tompkins Square Park, but most of my work happened at home, promoting the action. Each day I tweeted and tumbld what I thought would be important for people to know. As informational pamphlets became available I posted them as public google docs so that they went up lickety split, and anyone knowing what they were looking for would be able to maneuver themselves into the shadow of Ground Zero and the heart of global capitalism to occupy and make some noise.

I’ve been really lucky to help support amazing projects from media makers who are earnestly exploring what the next phase of human society holds. The system in which we live abuses vulnerable people while strengthening an ancient imbalance. We need something completely different.

We want economic justice and we want it now. We live in the information age. We have the evidence and metrics to prove beyond a doubt that money in politics results in a government that prioritizes profits over people. We can see the patterns in who holds, and who has always held, the most resources. People are dying from poor medical care with debt to accompany misery. The degradation that results from working without rights and living without basic support weakens humanity. When people are forced to choose between gas and food, the system is imbalanced. When people cannot afford to go to school because of arbitrary financial aid restrictions, the system is not working. When finding both an abortion and affordable daycare are a Sisyphean journey, the system is broken.

But perhaps the real reason for inequality is that we live in a system and not a community.

#occupywallstreet gives me hope that sustainable community is within reach if we stay in the streets long enough. Economic justice will emerge, and the next era of humanity will commence. Bringing to mind one of my favorite signs:

“I lost my job and found an occupation.”

On violence #ows #occupywallstreet #occupytogether

Foreclosures are violent, dying of medical debt is violent, working as a sex worker to feed yr kid is violent. The 99% feel violence every day that they choose between food and gas money. The system that we live inside is violent.
