We are the 99%
Right now. The richest 400 Americans own more than half of this country’s wealth and 1 in 5 in New York City live in poverty. Instead of bailing out people and helping people get jobs, they bailed out the same institutions that had created the economic crisis, giving them trillions of taxpayer money.
Is this a real democracy?
We don’t think so, and we will not be silent.
You may have already read about our movement, or heard about it from Lupe Fiasco, Michael Moore, Amy Goodman, Cornel West, or even Roseanne Barr. We are waking up.
On September 17th thousands of people flooded into the streets of the financial district for a rally. After the rally, we did not go back home. Hundreds of us did something different this time.
In the spirit of recent movements in Wisconsin, Egypt, Spain, Greece, Iceland, and others we decided to stay and reclaim our government and economic system. We have started to build the democracy that we want. Now tens of thousands of people across America are supporting us, and that number grows every day.
Zuccotti Park, which has been renamed (back to its original name of) Liberty Square, is a place for the 99% of us who do not have a voice represented by corporate lobbyists.
